Clean A Free Wordpress Theme

Update May 20th 2007: Theme Updated to Version 0.6
ChangeLog

  1. Widgets are now supported.
  2. Search Box moved into the header so you that the menu doesn’t break if you have more than 7 links.
  3. Fixed Firefox FlickrRSS CSS Image bug.
  4. Fixed BlockQuote Styling

A lot of people requested me if the current design I was using for my blog was available as a template to download. Since I want my design to remain unique, I’ve been meaning to release a free wordpress theme. But due to the lack of time, it’s still very much only on paper. I was pretty impressed by the theme released by Bartelme (help from Ilemoned). So I decided to create a few mods for it in lighter shades of colors. I am not a fan of dark colors and themes; I feel lighter colors give the text more readability, which is important for blogs. I got a little help from bartlme he was kind enough to provide the original Photoshop source file, But I had to rework quite a few design elements since the original source did not preserve most of the layers that I required.

While the themes released by bartlme were labeled as “Fresh” and “Dark” I decided to name the theme “Clean“.

Therefore I present you with The “Clean” Free Wordpress Theme. “Clean” is a fluid Three column Wordpress Theme/Template. The theme has been tested on WordPress 2.1.3 with Firefox and Safari, and IE. It validates as XHTML 1.0 Strict and CSS 2.0, and supports the following plugins:

Clean comes in two flavors. You can see the demos here or click the links below.

  1. Monochrome
  2. Bluehaze

You might want to subscribe to my rss feed to keep up with any updates I make to the Themes. If you have any suggestions or changes please post a comment.
Here is the ChangeLog for the Theme listing all the changes that I made compared to the original theme.

  • SEO Optimized
  • Removed Powered By WordPress footer and Header meta tags (Reduces Spam)
  • Uncluttered the Footer i.e. Replaced Links with Favicons
  • Changed A Few Icons
  • Added tabs instead of links for the menu

I plan to support more plugins and add support for widgets in the next release. Currently I have not decided whether to start a forum or not. My friend Voizd says its useless(difficult) to run a forum when you are running a blog. I am still undecided on which forum software to use. I am tempted to use bbpress like my friend Kanak. I am exploring Various Forums softwares like Punbb and Vanilla too.

The Themes are released under the GPL License you’ll find a copy inside the theme Directory. I would appreciate it if you leave the links in the footer intact.

Well wordpress just updated to stable 2.2, and I’ve already upgraded. Do you think this will still run on it?
Looks sweet though.

@martin Thanks let me know how it went.
@Jaan The theme shouldn’t create a problem with 2.2

Doesn’t sound strange, that this template is the SAME template that iLemoned.com release a few week ago?

You just changed colors

Absolutly great work! Thank you! One little thing: I want to integreate a little image in the blog title (like a logo) - bartleman has for his dark theme a customizing - is this possible at your clean theme too?

@Herbert it should be possible I will look into it and let you know. I will release a Customization Toolkit like bartleme.

Great job!

I love the theme of your site. Hopefully someday you’ll decide to make yourself a new one and release this theme to the public! I also love the Clean Blue Haze theme, so I just uploaded it and am now using it on my site. I would like to know how to divide the posts into excerpt sections and lists like you’ve done on your site. I’m fairly new to WP and don’t know how to do that. Thanks!

Linda Posted on Thursday, June 7th, 2007 at 5:28 pm
avatar 25

@Linda Thanks for dropping by. yes I will definitely release the theme when I redesign but you’ll need to be very patient :D. To enable excerpt you’ll have to edit your index.php and replace the_content() with the_excerpt(). If that sounds too complicated to you contact me via my contact form I’ll send you a more detailed explanation. Making it like what I have done on the site would be difficult since Its a completely different theme :)

Hi.. cool blog.. I was wondering if you would consider allowing me to add your blog feed to my news section on my webmaster website . I realise that not all of your posts are strictly webmaster related but ive written a script to only show posts containing certain keywords so theres no need to worry. Anyway, like i said.. cool blog.. some interesting stuff.. thanks

@ozone your welcome to do that as long as you don’t post the full content and just the excerpt.

Thanks.. I’m going to try it.

sir_aniep Posted on Thursday, August 2nd, 2007 at 8:44 am
avatar 30

You’ll need to change this line of code

.post-entry img
{
border:5px solid #000D32;
}

Change the 5px to a smaller value and the #000D32 to whatever hex color value you want.

I love this theme and hope to use it in a new blog. However, I would love to see some type of drop down menu for pages and sub-pages. Do you think that might be possible in a future update? Or do you know of a plugin that would allow me to do that with WP 2.2? Thanks and keep up the great work.

I think a balance between Marketplace and your own site will be the key. But no details about WP Marketplace have been revealed yet? So it might not even be possible to link back to your site

Great little designs, and for FREE too! ;0) It would be useful to do some derivatives of this site and sell them? (I’d buy one, as it’s very similar to one a client has asked me to do for him - Just a thought!)
