Wasteland Theme

Posted By Mina on November 16, 2008

I have to say that this theme is my most favorite of all of them. It was inspired by a site I saw somewhere on the net (sorry I don’t remember where). But yeah, it’s a great theme! In fact I like it so much i’m using it here on this site.

Now on to the particulars…it’s a 5 Column (main content, 2 sidebars and 2 top sections), widget-ready fixed width theme in soothing Creme and Brown colors featuring an author box, author info page, gravatars and highlighted author comments in the comments section along with Custom Archives, Sitemap and full width No Sidebars page templates. Tested in Firefox, Opera, Safari, IE6 and IE7. It’s read for the new Wordpress 2.7 comment threading feature while still being compatible with older versions. And of course it’s valid XHTML 1.0 and CSS 2.1 right out of the box.

  1. I’m using this them on my site. You did an awesome job! Thank you! :)

  2. Thank you, glad you like it! :D

  3. I’m using this on my site as well. I like it a lot. Any chance you might create something similar to the Gothic Twitch theme in the future? I am absolutely in love with it. Anyway, just wanted to let you know you have some lovely themes.

  4. Lisa,

Thank you! :D I really appreciate hearing that.

As far as the Gothic Twitch theme, what makes that theme special (at least to me) is the graphics and unfortunately I didn’t come up with those. I wish I had that sort of artistic talent. Who knows though, someday I might just get there.

But with that said I do have another theme currently in the works. It should be ready soon as I was working on it in conjunction with this one. And yet another one that’s drastically different than any of my themes to date currently rolling around my brain.

So yeah, who knows what will come in the future! :D

  5. Well, I’m excited to see what you come up with. I’m picky about themes. I like simple with an ornate flourish here and there if that makes any sense. Like a doodad in between messages or things that look wrought iron-ish at the corners and some sort of thingy by categories and links (like my technical terms? :D ). But sometimes folks go overboard with that stuff and it can become cluttered. The Gothic Twitch theme is a great balance of clean with some flourishes.

If you ever decide to do custom work, I’d be interested in working something out. Take care.

  8. This is very nice and clean looking

  10. Lisa - I love your technical terms! And I get exactly what you mean. You might also like the theme I’m currently doing (working name…Miscellany). It actually does have some wrought iron-ish doodads in the corners…especially if you squint. :D

Offering custom work is something I’m considering but I feel I need a bit more experience. But if there is something I can help with I’ll do my best.

Dan - Thank you very much! :D

  12. Indeed, this is a great theme. I’ve been considering updating my theme, and this theme has enough great ideas that I may just adopt it :) My theme color is green, though, so a few tweaks might be in order! That’s one of the great things about Wordpress, it’s so simple to completely personalize.

  13. Hey Tim,

I know exactly what you mean about Wordpress…that’s why I love it so much. It can do anything you need it to do. :D

  15. I like this theme alot. I am having trouble with the author box. it does not want to show up on my maion page. Is there something I am doing wrong?

  16. Ray,

The author box wasn’t meant to be on the main page. It’s purpose is to give info about the author when a specific post is clicked on. It’s generally used with multi-author sites.

  17. Ok thanks for the reply. Where do you put the info about the author so it shows up when a post is clicked on?

  18. It pulls it from your Wordpress user profile.

Go into the Dashboard >> Users >> “Your User Profile” >> Biographical Info.

  19. Hi, Mina!

A friend asked me to set up a blog for him, (above), and I spent some time at the WordPress.org site looking for just the right theme. Since I’m posting here, I’m sure you can guess which one I picked. :-) Anyway, I’m kinda new to this WordPress stuff, and I couldn’t even find the link to the instructions/documentation/FAQ where I would find these answers, so I apologize in advance for asking you directly, but, well, I’m stuck.

    1. How do I get the mixed capital letters to show correctly in the line, “Huge Health Secrets Blog”, right at the very top? Yes, the tagline is set correctly in wp-admin/options-general.php .

    2. Where do I configure the “Welcome To Our Site…” paragraph? (Hrmm, looks like a mixed cap issue there, too.)

Thank you so much for your help! :-)

    – David (at) Beroff (dot) com

  20. David,

I think you made a good choice. Welcome to the wonderful world of Wordpress! :-) And never apologize for asking questions…how else do we learn? So to answer your questions…

    1. Go into style.css and find this line:

    .header .description { width: 500px; margin: 0 0 0 60px; padding: 0; font-size: 1.5em; font-weight: normal; font-family: Georgia; color: #3f3013; text-align: left; text-transform: lowercase; }

    Then delete this part only and save the file: text-transform: lowercase;

    2. This one is a 2 parter. Go back into style.css and down near the bottom find:

    .top-section .area h2 { color: #444; font-size: 1.2em; text-transform: uppercase; letter-spacing: normal; margin: 5px auto 5px auto; padding: 3px 3px 3px 7px; text-align: left; background: transparent; border-bottom: #7c7953 1px solid; width: 95%; }

As with #1 above find and delete: text-transform: uppercase; Save the file.

To add your own text in that section go into area1,php and replace what I’ve got there with whatever you want.

    3. There was a recently discovered “oops” (totally my mistake) in the code that causes the blog title to not show up in IE. To fix that go back into style.css and find this line:

    .header h1 a { text-decoration: none; color: #3f3013; text-indent: -9999px; overflow: hidden; }

Now delete these parts only and save:

    text-indent: -9999px; overflow: hidden;

That should do it. Let me know if you have any other questions.

  21. Hello,
I really like the theme styling, however while trying it out I found an issue I can’t figure out.

I fount If I add the Tag Cloud widget to the right sidebar, the left sidebar seems to have replaced the right sidebar, and the right sidebar just disappears. The Tag Cloud widget does appear on the right with the contents of the left sidebar. I tried some of the other widgets and I get the same result.
    Using WP 2.6.5

Any thoughts on how to resolve this?
    Thanks

  22. Ray,

I’m not able to duplicate that issue on my 2.6.5 install, I’m a bit lost here. Do you have a link so I can see the problem?

Where did you download the theme from? Was it from the official WP theme directory or another site? Reason is that there are other sites out there that are getting themes, modifying them (someitmes maliciously) and then redistributing them on their sites. I only submit my themes for download from the WP site. Or if you did download from WP.org maybe somehow the download got corrupted. Can you download and install a fresh copy?

My next question would be concerning plugins…sometimes they have adverse affects on things. If you do have any activated maybe try deactivating them and then reactivating one by one to see if that could be the problem.

Please keep me informed on how this goes. If this is a bug with the theme, I’ll have to get a fix for it.

  23. It took me a lot of trial and error to find a theme that I really love. Wastelands is definately the one for me. Great job. I love this theme

  24. Well thank you, I appreciate that! :D

  25. LOVE this theme. It was very easy to customize and I like the layout.

I’m having a problem using the “Search” form. I tried using the Search widget but I’m guessing that adding widgets to the left sidebar is overriding something and keeping “searchform.php” from working.

Any ideas how I can get the search form to show up?

  26. April,

    Glad you like it!

Yeah, the search widget thing was a bug that showed up after the theme was made public. I just submitted a fixed version to the Theme Directory today but they have to review it before it will be available. With that said, I’m emailing the updated version (zip file) to you at the email you used here. Please let me know if you don’t get it or if you have any other issues.

  27. Love it!

Hello, I’m new to WP and am in the early stages of building a new site. In the process, I’ve tried dozens of themes, and must say that the Wasteland theme is fantastic for what I need.

I have run across one issue, that I’m sure is an easy fix, and probably something on my end. Using IE7, the Blog Title doesn’t show up, just the tag line. How can I correct this?

Also, I noticed that your Wasteland has a different header BG/image. Is this a customization, or standard with the new version?

    Thanks for your work, Mike

  28. Hi Mike,

Welcome to the Wordpress World, it can be an amazing place!

Yeah, the missing blog title is a bug that was discovered after the initial release. It’s been fixed in the latest release. It’s been submitted and I’m waiting for WP to approve it. It’s an easy fix but I’ll go ahead email you a zip file of the newest version since it’s compatible with 2.7 and the currently available version isn’t.

The header was me getting “creative”, but the powers that be at the Theme Directory want themes to utilize the wp standard blog title and description. The only difference between the header here and the one included in the download is the text.

  29. Thank you Mina, for the very quick response. It looks great now.

    Keep up the nice work.

  30. My pleasure!

  31. I like your theme, too. Seems to me, though, that the teeny little smiley at the bottom ought to be a secret link. =) via the dashboard, of course.

Count me in for an zip if it’s gonna be a long time to get the new version up at WP. If it’s not a bother. Thanks.

  32. Marc,

    I’ve emailed you.

That little smiley face creeped me out no end when I first saw it. I had no clue what is was at the time. Then I dumped IE and switched to Firefox and never saw him again!

But since it was brought up I figured I let people know how to get rid of it. For anyone who doesn’t know the creepy little smiley guy at the bottom of your site (only shows when you’re not logged in) is part of the wp-stats plugin. To make him go away just add img#wpstats{display:none} somewhere in your style.css.

  33. Thank you, Mina!

OK, I commented out all three text-transform’s. (I figured if I didn’t like two of the cases, I probably wouldn’t like the third, once I eventually found it.) Commented out the text-indent/overflow parts and added the img#wpstats for MSIE. Updated area1 appropriately. I also figured out commenting out the height’s in the top-section once I saw the area1 text now overflowing the original intended space (into invisibility). See link above for new appearance.

    Also got a gravatar. ;-)

May I respectfully suggest that you make things like this (especially the area1 text) end-user configurable? This would help because: 1. End-users could modify these items without having to involve a tech person, and, 2. Once the theme gets updated in the future, some/all of these changes will get overwritten.

    Thanks again!

    – David (at) Beroff (dot) com

  34. I love this theme however I have trouble with displaying my site on Internet Explorer. It shows the title fine on Firefox, Chrome, Safari just fine, but not on Internet Explorer for some reason.

Anyone have an idea why? Other themes show the title on all browsers but not this one. Did I break something here?

  35. Hmmm… just found the tread that tells me about the elusive zip file to fix the title issue.
Can I have that file too please?

    Thank you!

  36. David - I thought you disappeared, it’s been a while. Love your gravatar! :D

I almost hate to say this after all the work you’ve done, but there is an updated version waiting to be approved by Wordpress. Let me know if you want it now.

As for area1 and area2, they were originally supposed to be for little tidbit things. But I do see your point and will take your suggestion into consideraton, but to be honest I think you’re only the 2nd person to want those areas to expand. But yeah, this is valid.

Angelo - I’m glad you like it and the disappearing title in IE was a bug. In case you come here first, I’ve emailed you. :D

  37. Yeah, sorry for the delay. The client hadn’t returned to the project since I worked on it last, so I just nudged him yesterday, which also reminded me to take a look at this page to see your earlier response. As for the gravatar, um, thanks. Now it’s your turn to show your face. ;-)

No worries; there was no huge effort. In fact, I almost *expected* to have to redo it, especially since I’d seen that you’d already updated the files. Thus, my comment about making things like this configurable. But nothing wrong with learning. :-) It’s been quite a while since I’d gotten my hands dirty; it feels good. So, sure, pop me the new tarball, please.

  38. I love this theme! The only thing I’m confused about right now is the area1 text. I understand that it must be manually changed in the area1.php file, but I’m trying to offer this theme as an option for a multi-blog website. Unfortunately, the users at the site won’t have the ability to edit this file manually (and only 1 copy of the theme will exist anyway, so that eliminates the option totally).

So I guess where I’m going is: any ideas on how to get around this? Can I remove the area1 section all together?

Like I said, I love the theme and will be using it on my blog (on the multi-blog site) assuming I can get it working. :) Thanks!

  39. Thanks for the zip file, Mina.

Perhaps the answer for the area1 section is to have it draw its content from a page with a specific (uncommon) name, e.g., wasteland-area1 or something. That would also address Jon’s concern by allowing each user to configure their info separately, (I think).

    – David (at) Beroff (dot) com

  40. Hi. I am a noobie using your Wasteland theme to build my page. I would like to add your “main sidebar” from Lunatic Fringe to the Wasteland theme to give me one more place to add widgets at the bottom of the content column.

    Is that possible?

I coped the programming from Lunatic and created a new file in Wasteland that was identical. I also copied the programming from the Lunatic theme stylesheet into the Wasteland stylesheet.

Nothing happened. I didn’t hurt anything, apparently, but did not get the result I wanted.

    Can you guide me?

  41. Jon - That is the only thing I do not like about MU, is the inability for blogs to edit template files. I understand why it’s that way, but it is a drag. So yeah, to use in a multi-blog platform both area1 and area2 would have to be removed.

By the way, I’ve emailed you the updated zip file.

David - Your solution could work (although the programming for that is a little beyond my abilities) but only if there were a few blogs using that theme. To edit the template files in a multi-blog platform you basically need access to the server the site is sitting on.

Dan - I couldn’t see much at your site, it says I need to login. But the reason nothing is happening is that you need to add the sidebar to the functions.php file so that it gets recognized. It doesn’t seem like the site is letting me post the code so I’ll send that fix along with the updated zip file in an email.

  42. Mina,

Thank you so much. I have to say, I’ve never seen customer service like this…even from a company from which I’ve bought a product or service. ;) I really appreciate your help.

  43. “To edit the template files in a multi-blog platform you basically need access to the server the site is sitting on.”

Right. That’s why I thought that this might be better accomplished with a WordPress page, which is maintained in the database, rather than a file. It would allow the end-user to maintain it with the existing WordPress interface, plus, in Jon’s case, each user would have their own namespace, so they could each have a unique page with the same name.

    – David (at) Beroff (dot) com

  44. Jon - You’re Welcome! :D I try to give the kind of service that I myself want to receive.

David - Ah I get you. That’s sounds good, but I have no idea how you would implement that.

  45. Just started using this theme and really like it. I’m having trouble with the search widget. It won’t seem to work.

I noticed someone asked about it above and you sent a correction file to them. Could you send that to me as well.

    Thanks

  46. Edwin,

    I’ve emailed you.

  47. Mina:

Hello! Thank you for creating this great theme. I love it!

As a newbie, I’m having some trouble with adding widgets to the left sidebar. I lose everything but the new widget when adding a new widget there. Any ideas?

Also, is the new version up on Wordpress yet? I’m trying to fix the header issue with IE as well.

    http://www.athomewithdad.net

    Thanks again!

  48. Bryan,

    I’ve emailed you. :D

  49. Hi! Tried to use this theme, it’s great!
But in category field I see that huge tech text:

    What’s wrong?
(Sorry for my bad English and thank you for great design)

  50. Thanks for the e-mail, Mina. And I second what David B says about your area1. I for one really like that little bit of real estate with the calendar next to it. I like the position that it has on the page. I really like how AprilTara modified hers.

I just thought of a question, too. Sorry for askin’ without trying to figure it out myself…. What is the simplest way to change the hue of the background? I might want it a little more reddish, or something.

How about a page of just little gravatars or links to pages that are using this theme? You could even throw in a link to the latest (and possibly not yet downloadable from WP) version of the theme. With a changelog, too?

Hmmm, and how do I center the text above the calendar (it’s a little shifted to the right)?

  51. so I like things centered… Like for example, the stay at home dad… the books on the left sidebar… what’s the best way to go about centering items in a widget?

  52. And how about this one… probably the same place, but I’ll ask anyway…. Edwin’s page has books on the right sidebar. those are centered, but the text underneath them is not. How would he center that text, or how would he adjust the margin so that the book title doesn’t start on the very left edge of the shaded sidebar area? (I liked the post about foul language, by the way)

  53. Hi Mina!
Loving the theme and added to my site, however i have some problems that i can’t resolve. I’ve tried to add some watgeds to the sidebars, but when i do so the theme sidebar disappear, and my purpose is that it’s will show up and the new wadgeds will be at the end of the theme sidebar.
Please let me know if you have any solutions for me, i can’t give up the wadgeds and i want to keep the theme sidebars.

Sorry for the second comment, i’ve accidentally wrote the wrong email.

  55. wlaer - That’s a problem with translations. I’ve emailed you about this. And you’re english is fine. :D

Marc - Okay, where to start. :)
    1) The background…did you mean the brown or the beige where the content is? The brown background is an image and you can either use a new image or use a graphics program to play around with it until you get what you want. The line of code for that is:

    body { margin: 0; font-size: 76.5%; text-align: center; vertical-align: top; background: #3f3013 url(images/body-bg.jpg) repeat; color: #444; }

If you mean the beige part the code you would go thru style.css (mainly the #main_content, #container and #container_wide sections) and change any reference to #ebe1c8 in background: #ebe1c8; to what ever color you want. There are a ton of sites that show colors and their corresponding codes out there.

    2) To gather all the sites using this theme would take more time than I have right now. And as soon as WP gets around to approving the updated version it will be linked in this post.

    3) The code for the text above the calendar is:

    #wp-calendar caption { color: #533419; text-align: center; width: 80%; margin: 5px 0 5px 20px; font-family: Times, Verdana,Sans-Serif; font-size: 14px; }

Play with the margin setting until it’s where you want it to be. The order of the settings for the margin are top - right - bottom - left.

    4) Centering things in widgets, for me at least, is tricky especially if they are plugins. I usually just play around with the sidebar codes until I get it right. Yeah I know, that’s a pretty cheesy answer but unfortunately that all I got. :D

    5) See answer #4. But I will say for something like this I wouldn’t touch “margin” settings but would adjust “padding” settings.

  56. Shannon,

It’s a glitch in the code of the older version of the theme. I’m going to email you a copy of the updated version that hasn’t yet been approved. It should fix that issue. If not let me know.

  57. For some reason, I did not receive the e-mail. Could you please resend.

Thank you for your patience. And sorry for any inconvenience.

    Try sending it to ecroz@bellsouth.net.

  58. By the way, so you don’t have to go searching through the posts, this was about the Search issue.

    Thanks again.

  59. One more question:

Is there a way to organize my “Links Categories” so that in my link widget I can put the categories in a certain order, or do I just have to figure out some way to alphabetize the names?

  60. This is truely an amazing theme and I have no doubt in my mind that my first try on a wordpress site setup will use this theme. Looking forward to play around with it.

  61. Edwin - I’ve emailed the update to you at the address you provided. If you don’t get it, please let me know. I also answered your links question in the email.

Michael - Thank you so much, hope you enjoy it. As you may have realized, there is an updated version of the theme which I have emailed to you.

  62. Hi Mina,

Love this theme and wanted to add my thanks to the list. Of course, I’ve got the same problem as many of the above with IE. In fact my work still force me to use IE6! If you could email the latest version I would really appreciate it!

I’m working on an extra page on my site. If you take a look you’ll see it’s being set up as a resource for people interested in Mental Health issues. Whilst doing this though, I have come across a lot of people interested in how to get things started with a website. I’m going to go through the details of WP etc but also give a special mention to the people that have volunteered their time to help my site look better. You’ll be high on that list!

    Regards,

    Jamie

  63. Jamie,

    I’ve emailed you. :D

  64. Thanks for the update Mina. The search feature is now working.

One more question. Apparently, when using the categories as a drop down menu, it makes the selection bar as long as your longest category title. On my blog, that causes it to actually hang off the side of the template. Is there a way to just set the size of that drop down menu selector so it fits into the template no matter how long my category titles are?

    Thanks for your work.

  65. Sorry for more questions.

How do I get the picture I want to show up in the author box. There is no option in the profile page to upload a picture.

It looks like it is a “gravatar” thing. I’ve set one up two different times but it doesn’t ever seem to work.

Can you help me with that?

  66. Edwin,

To be honest about the drop down box, I’m not sure. I’m not totally up on the workings of widgets. I can look into it, but right now I can’t say. I will get back to you on this.

Correct, the author box photo is a gravatar. Gravatar.com works off email addresses. So to use them you have to be sure that the email address associated with your user profile is also the email address you use for setting up the gravatar.

  67. Thanks for the help. As you can see, I got the gravatar thing working.

Don’t spend too much time fretting about the category thing.

    Thanks again.

  68. Wow, your site is looking good!

Gravatars had me going for a while too. I couldn’t figure out why mine would show up in some places but not others, then realized it was because I used different emails. Crazy! :D

And that category box does throw things off. I just seem to have some sort of mental block when it comes to making widgets behave. And to an extent is annoys me that I can’t figure it out! I would also like to figure out how to get things centered, like your archives dropdown box that is off to the left. Drives me nuts. When and if I do, I’ll let you know.

  69. Love the theme, thanks and Merry Xmas :)

Would you please send me the new version as well. For some reason, the home page looses left side bar and shows all on the right one. On other pages it works. Also search does not show up at all.
This is a new blog, so no content yet, but I would like to get it working before I spend too much time adding content.

    Thanks

  70. Lilianne,

    You’ve got mail! :D

  71. Hi, Mina:
Thank you for such lovely theme, it’s awsome.
I had the same issue with category field than wlaer did, and my site is in spanish. I would like to know where are all the strings to be translated, so I can translate them. If you want me, I can after send you the spanish strings, unless you managed to use them from the wordpress .mo file.
And a last question. I’d like to replace the header image ¿where can I do this?
Best regards an thank you again for your work

  72. Hi Mina, tried several themes and this one took my fancy, would like to vary the colour tjheme at some point in the future perhaps as a very pale blue or a pale yellow as I have received a few derogatory comments but the theme I do like.

I have changed the header graphics and would like to remove the calendar from the page. Is that simply the case of removing the reverence to the calendar in the style sheet?

Finding my way around but not too au fait with all of this.

Have been having trouble getting google analytics to run on the blog, any ideas how to achieve this? I had ir f=running fine until I changed to your theme bus since, even with reinstalling the code no luck.

    Norman

  73. Ricardo G - Are you using a spanish version of wordpress or just language files? Wlaer was using the russian version of wordpress and the issue wasn’t able to be resolved. When he switched to the english wp and the updated theme (which I will email you) everything was fine.

As far as where everything that needs to be translated is, I don’t know. I only know english. Maybe someone at the support forums will know more about it.

Norman - To remove the calendar you need to go into area2.php and remove the reference to it there…not the stylesheet.

I don’t know all that much about google analytics, but do know several people running my themes with it working. I just don’t have a clue about this. Sorry.

As you might know by now, there is an updated version that WP has yet to get to to approve. I’ll email it to you.

  74. hello, I just love your theme Wasteland :-) but have some problem, I can not get the search widget on the blog. Do you have any suggestions how I will get it works?
I have tried to get help on the swedish support but I couldn’t to get it to work. Should be very pleased if you have any solution for this little problem I have. :-)
    Have a great weekend,,
    regards
    anki :-)

  75. Anki,

    I’ve emailed you.

  76. just revisiting my old question about centering the text above the calendar in area2….

    Mina replied:
    3) The code for the text above the calendar is:

    #wp-calendar caption { color: #533419; text-align: center; width: 80%; margin: 5px 0 5px 20px; font-family: Times, Verdana,Sans-Serif; font-size: 14px; }

Play with the margin setting until it’s where you want it to be. The order of the settings for the margin are top - right - bottom - left.

Yes, that was the place to fix it. (the css file). I’ve changed mine to:

    #wp-calendar caption { color: #533419; text-align: center; width: 80%; margin: 5px 0px 5px 0px; font-family: Times, Verdana,Sans-Serif; font-size: 20px; }

I’m not sure why you had 20px for the left margin, instead of 0px like your right margin.

  77. “I’m not sure why you had 20px for the left margin, instead of 0px like your right margin.”

Um…maybe because if I used 0 for my left margin the caption wouldn’t have been placed where I wanted it to be?

  78. sorry, i should’ve phrased that differently. I don’t mean to say that there was a mistake or your artistic design is wrong. I love it, personally. I was just sharing. Hey, here’s something else…

Mr Crozier (his area1 text is cut off, or is that just my browser?) asked about that drop down select menu… how about this for a simple solution:

    Select Category
    A Springboard for:
    … You
    … Your Family Life
    Atheism

I’m thinking that if you put a space in front of “A Springboard”, it will line up above the “… You”.

    Just a thought.

  79. this is funny…. Mina is using word press which promotes speech. The word cloister is derived from a latin word which could be interpreted as “shut up”.

  80. The text in Edwin’s area1 looks fine to me and I’m using Firefox. As for the category names, that would be up to him.

And I interpret the meaning of cloister to be shut away as opposed to shut up.

“To shut away from the world in or as if in a cloister; seclude.”

  81. Mina,

Lovely theme. I was wondering how I can make some small changes.

    1. Change my theme photo at top
    2. My Title splits on 2 lines (I have 27 character’s including spaces) :)
    3. How do I enlarge all reading text just a little bit. I have reading glasses and man this type is a little too small for my eyes.
    4. I too would like to add additional widgets (or change the ones already there) but when I add them to the sidebars it wipes out the ones you currently have there and the left side bar disappears. I really like the layout as it comes, just need to play with the widgets a little :)
    5. How do I add to the blog roll?? My brain is fried right now and this is probably an easy one.

    Tammy
PS I am running WP 2.7 and love this one.

  82. Tammy,

Before I go over your issues I want to tell you that there is a newer version of the theme that I’m still waiting to be approved by WP. I’ll email you a copy of it and I would advise updating your theme before making any modifications. You don’t want to have to do it twice, right? :)

Okay for the first 3 you’ll need to be in style.css.

    1) Find this line: .header { background: #ebe1c8 url(images/header.jpg) no-repeat; width: 990px; height: 140px; margin: 0 auto 10px auto; padding: 0; float: left; border-bottom: #3f3013 3px double; }

Just change header.jpg to whatever your image is called.

    2) Find: .header h1 { width: 500px; padding: 0; margin: 20px 0 0 30px; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, Sans-serif; font-size: 3.5em; line-height: 40px; text-align: left; }

You’ll need to change the width value…600px should be enough.

    3) In: body { margin: 0; font-size: 76.5%; text-align: center; vertical-align: top; background: #3f3013 url(images/body-bg.jpg) repeat; color: #444; }

Here you’ll change the font-size value. I would advise changing a little at a time until you’re satisfied.

    4) The problem you are having with the widgets is a bug in the original version, and will be fixed in the updated version I’ve sent you.

    5) In the left hand navigation bar in your Admin screen you’ll see a section titled “Links”. Select “Add New”, enter your information and save.

  83. Hi Mina,

I love this theme and I’m using it on my first website. Please forgive me for not sharing the site yet, I’ll post again when I have it running. Would you please sent me your updated version?

    Greg

  84. Mina,
    You are a gem :)

Thanks a million for the info and the zip file.

And I knew I had to have sleepy eyes for #5, ehmmmm.

    Thanks again,
    Tammy

  85. Greg - You’ve got mail my friend.

    Tammy - No problem!

  86. Mina,

    4) The problem you are having with the widgets is a bug in the original version, and will be fixed in the updated version I’ve sent you.

I installed your new zip file but I am still having problems with adding widgets making the ones in your theme disappear in Sidebar 1.

If you get a moment jump over and look at the one lonely little widget in Sidebar 1 and you’ll see that categories, pages & subscribed disappeared all together. http://www.jttenterprise.com

    What am I doing wrong?

    Good nite.

    Tammy

  87. Tammy,

The way Wordpress works is that when you add a widget to a sidebar, the default sidebar does disappear and is replaced by the widgets you add.

To keep categories, pages and subscribed along with the media widget you added you’ll need to add those three widgets also.

Widgets are designed to replace what’s in the default sidebar, not add to it.

  88. How do I update the welcome message, can’t seem to find it in wordpress anywhere?

  89. Got that figured out, have a hover problem with this template though. My text disappears rather than underlines is there a way to fix this?

Also when I go to comments the alignment does not seem to work right. That is the items on the Right hand column drop to the bottom for lack of room

Love the color and style of this template so would like to work out the bugs.

  90. Updated all the Hover colors in the style sheet and they display now, the right thing seems to have cleared itself.

This is a fanatic style sheet, thank. Sorry for the novice post, sometimes it helps just to type it out so you can think about a solution.

  91. Ah ha!!! Gotcha.

    Duh me :)

    Tammy

  94. Hmmm. I said earlier “Mr Crozier (his area1 text is cut off, or is that just my browser?) ” and I started looking at other sites. I found that it makes a difference if you have the view settings in firefox set to default. I notice Mina’s page wasn’t showing all the area1 text either. So I changed my view settings on firefox for the first time, and now I am able to see the whole picture. =)

    Happy New Year to ya.

  95. Hey Marc, very good info for others that were having the same issue as you. Thanks for coming back and letting us know. :D

  96. Mina,
Let me first say that you go ABOVE AND BEYOND to answer everyone’s questions. As I troll through your responses I am learning a lot. I thought I would ask for the new theme as well…and then read through the rest!

    Keep up the good work!

  97. Mina, from the first day I downloaded it I knew that Wasteland was going to be the theme that I was going to use for my Geocaching website called thegeocacher.com. I’ve tweaked it a bit with a couple of widgets, added a date to the header, changed the search just a bit but I really think that it fits well with what I am trying to accomplish. The earth tones portray the feel of “geo” for me as well.

I’m probably NOT done tweaking yet. Still fighting with centering things…. It was so much easier when I could just use the <center tag in HTML instead of all this CSS stuff.

Again, thanks for a great theme… I look forward to what more you might have to offer.

    -= Bill =-
    http://www.thegeocacher.com

  98. Amber - I try my best to get to questions people have although I have to admit, no always as quickly as I’d like. :D And forgive me if I’m misunderstanding (I am BEAT…TGIF!!!!!) but if you’re asking me to send you the updated version of the theme, you don’t need to ask. Wordpress FINALLY approved all the updated themes and they are now available for download from the theme directory. And if you weren’t asking me to send it, then ignore all I just wrote! :D

Bill - The earthy feel is exactly what I get from it too. And you technicallly can still use the

thing, you site just won’t validate. To be honest if you ran The Cloisters through validation it would fail miserably. :D

And to both of you, thank you for your kind words. That means alot.

  99. Then we’re all good since I just downloaded today, I should be fine!

…I’m just dinkng my way through to see what I can change, add, etc. Fun times! I’ll check back often for more comments…

    Thanks again…

    Amber

  100. Mina, one last thing. I redid my header with my title, and I’m trying to get my title that is on your header off. Is there a way? I’m sure it’s easy, but I’m not getting it. No hurry!!

    Amber

  101. Amber,

I emailed you because code doesn’t always show up here.

  102. I’m creating my very first blog and fell in love with your theme from the beginning. It’s going to be a solid waste site … and I’m using a theme called Wasteland; that’s cool stuff. I have version 1.3 - is that the newest one? I really like the font used in your header, not the gothic one, but the one that is used to spell “WASTELAND.” Is that a commercially available font?

  103. Hi Mina, I found Wasteland great too! :-)

I have some problems with the Search Widget (I can’t display it) and the category field (it’s full of stange text…).
Could you send me an e-mail with the solutions?
I think I need the zip file with the theme’s upgrade and the right translation (in Italian) file.
    Is it true?

I hope my english is not too awful…

  104. Josephine - Wow…my theme on a solid waste site…I think I actually take that as a compliment. And my mother always did say I’d end up in the crapper! :D Seriously though, I’m glad you like it!

And yes 1.3 is the latest version. The font used for the original Wasteland header is called 28 Days Later I believe and I think I did get it online (free). Try Dafont.com and if it’s not there, do a Google search.

aurora - It would help if you had a link to the site so that I could see whats going on. It’s kind of hard to know based on what you’ve said. And you can download the newest version (if you don’t have it) from the Wordpress Theme Directory. As for translations…I can’t help with that. I only speak English, sorry.

  105. Hi Mina,
the website I put in the field below is my provisory domain: you can see what I have done so far.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t speak Italian :-)
I’ll try to explain my problems with two examples.

I refer to something you wrote to other users:

    wlaer wrote:
“[...]But in category field I see that huge tech text:

    Mina answered to him:
wlaer - That’s a problem with translations. I’ve emailed you about this.

    Mina anwered to her:
“[...]Yeah, the search widget thing was a bug that showed up after the theme was made public. I just submitted a fixed version to the Theme Directory today but they have to review it before it will be available. With that said, I’m emailing the updated version (zip file) to you at the email you used here. Please let me know if you don’t get it or if you have any other issues[...]”

    —-

I tihnk I have this two problems too, and so maybe I need the zip file with the theme’s upgrade and the right translation file.
    Is that true?

    Thank you in advance,
    Aurora.

  106. Mina, I just download the 1.3 version of Wasteland from WordPress.org! :-D
With this new version I’ll solve both my problems?

  107. aurora,

The new version will solve the search widget/sidebar problem.

The other issue is more complicated. Are you using an Italian version of Wordpress or just a language file?

wlaer was using a Russian version of the Wordpress software and the problem couldn’t be resolved. When he switched to the English version of Wordpress, with Russian language files everything was fine.

Forgive me if I sound confused, it’s very early for me. :)

  108. Hi Mina,

I’m using just a language file (I installed it in the English version of WordPress).

Maybe I could solve this problem modifying the code. Couldn’t I?

    Thank you in advance,
    Aurora.

  109. aurora,

Are you still having problems with the updated version of the theme (ver 1.3)?

  110. Hello Mina
Wasteland is a perfect fit for my page thank you for creating it and sharing it as well. I will be posting some vintage railway photo’s so this is the perfect colour scheme .. I am trying to figure out how to allow someone to post comments like I am doing on your page now. If you have any suggestions on how to do this it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank You
    Bob

  111. Wow Mina! :-D

The new version of Wasteland solved all my problems!
    Thanks a lot!

    Kisses
    Aurora

P.S.: I put in the field below my actual domain: soon I’ll relocate there my blog.

  112. Bob - I can’t wait to see that pictures. I grew up in NE Pennsylvania and although the trains weren’t really running anymore by the time I came along I still remember the stories about my great-grandfather’s time as a conductor on the line between PA and upstate New York. :D

But to answer your question, I went to your site and noticed that you required folks to login before they can post comments. Did you want it like that? If not go into Admin >> Settings >> General and make sure the box by “Membership” is unchecked. You can also go into Admin >> Settings >> Discusson to fine tune your settings. And FYI - if you have open comments I would advise activating the Akismet plugin if you already haven’t…It’s a godsend for catching spam.

aurora - Once you said you were using the English version of WP I knew the new version would take care of things. :D

  113. There’s another a little problem:
now I can display the widget Search, but it has not the header.

I added the header in searchform.php:

But there’s a strange line above the widget…

Cuold you have a look at my website?

    Thank you in advance,
    Aurora

  114. Sorry: I wrote the code in my post, but… there is not!

  115. Ok, excuse me, I solved my problem:
I added only the code for the header (the one among the tags h2) and all work fine.

    Thank you again, Mina! :D

    Kisses
    Aurora

  116. Wow aurora, you have it solved before I even saw this. Excellent! :D

  117. Great theme Mina! I’m using it for my website. I am running into a bit of trouble: I want to make my “category” section a pull-down menu rather than listing them (I have 30 or so categories–listing them takes a lot of space). I found a code, but can’t figure out what to do to make my categories appear in the pull-down menu.

  118. Evangeline,

Thanks, I’m glad you like it! Now for the categories, if you are using a widget all you need to do is expand the category widget (it’ll say “edit” on the right side) and you’ll see 3 options:

    *Show as drop down
    *Show post counts
    *Show hierarchy

Just check “Show as drop down” and you’re set.
